The New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) is still not widely known or well understood across the continent or internationally. With this publication, we hope that you will learn more about NEPAD’s vision and course. We also hope that such knowledge will make it easier for you to join in the efforts to make that vision a reality.
At the turn of the millennium, African leaders and their citizens started looking to the future with renewed hope. The continent had come through decades of economic stagnation, poverty, corruption, authoritarian rule and devastating wars. But the end of the 1990s brought the first signs of a new turn. Some of the region’s most protracted conflicts had begun to wind down. Economic growth rates picked up. And in country after country, pro- democracy movements succeeded in replacing repressive regimes with elected governments. Those positive trends gave rise to a heightened sense of purpose as well: for Africans to take charge of their own future....more

Global Food Update
Food and India were Africa's
keywords this past fortnight. The
World Bank reported global food
prices up by 83% in the past three
years causing riots in Egypt,
Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Senegal
and Ethiopia while South Africa's
Cosatu has warned of riots over
food price hikes there. US$ 200
million more in US emergency
food aid is to be made available to
help alleviate food shortages in
Africa and elsewhere. Egypt has
restricted food exports and many
African governments have lowered
import tariffs....

Welcome!
The agreement to install a submarine
cable to fiber optics connecting South
Africa to Sudan is a breakthrough for
telephone and Internet services in Africa.
The proposed $ 300 million will give
consumers and businesses in Africa
savings of $ 1 billion per year and
improve the speed and reliability of the
telephone, the Internet and the data
transmission services. Its installation will
complete the project of NEPAD to
surround Africa to a network of modern
telecommunications cables.
Late one night, Jean Leonard Karuranga
heard a commotion outside his house in
Kigali, Rwanda. There were loud voices
and then a sharp cry. Too scared to
venture outside alone, Mr. Karuranga
used his mobile phone to call a local
security group that protects the
neighborhood from marauding gangsters.
“The defense force found my cousin
bleeding right outside my gate. Thugs
had stabbed and robbed him,” he said.
“We rushed him to the hospital just in
time. If I didn’t have a cell phone, we
would be talking of something else. He
was saved by the mobile phone.”

Five years after its entry into service, the
Mozambique-South Africa pipeline, fuels
economic growth and regional
cooperation in southern Africa. It proves
that the Western ideas on Africa suffering
from a "curse" of natural resources are lies
and demonstrates that the African
development plan NEPAD has begun to
fulfill its promises in the field of
development and economic integration.
It was a problem with an obvious but
expensive solution. Mozambique
contained some 3,000 bn cubic feet of
natural gas, but lacked the technical
capacity and domestic market to exploit
it. Energy-hungry South Africa, across the
western border, faced soaring demand for
electricity but had no gas with which to
generate it....more

Africa would like to join China, India, Brazil
and other developing countries in
benefiting from the Kyoto Protocol’s new
Clean Development Mechanism. The hydro-
electric power station on the Nyagak River
in Uganda’s West Nile region is just one
small example of how Africans can benefit
from investments designed to help prevent
climate change and global warming.
For the residents of Uganda’s rural West Nile
region, generating energy for cooking, lights
and business was an expensive, dirty and
sometimes frustrating experience. Most
households used kerosene or wood for day-to-
day needs, while local business and people
who were better-off had to buy generators
and diesel fuel for electricity....more

Ike Okenwa: The Will To Succeed By: Princess Ezenwa Okenwa

Ogemdi Nwagbuo made six starts last
year on the defensive line and started at
nose tackle in the 2007 opener vs. UAB.
A little snow wasn't going to keep
Ogemdi Nwagbuo from becoming a
Michigan State Spartan. Having grown
up in San Diego, Calif., Nwagbuo wasn't
likely to do any cross-country skiing when
he made his recruiting trip to East
Lansing in the winter of 2005.
"Living in San Diego, that was the first
time I had ever seen snow," Nwagbuo
recalls with a laugh. "I liked everything
here, but being in the cold was the
complete opposite to what I was used to
in California. I wasn't used to that. I didn't
own any pants because I wore shorts all
the time." ....more

The New York Giants announced the signing of six rookie free agents and the release of two players from their roster. On the way in are defensive tackles Joshua Muse of Louisiana Tech and Ogemdi Nwagbuo who just graduated from Michigan State, guards Andrew Bain of Miami and Camell Stewart of LSU, center Digger Bujnoch of Cincinnati, and offensive tackle Dylan Thiry of Northwestern. The Giants also released a pair of players, defensive back Andrew Shanle and tight end Marcus Freeman. Shanle and Freeman were on the practice squad at the end of last season. One thing to keep in mind: The rookie free agents have to play their best game at the mini camp next week to remain with the team, in other words be the best or be released after the mini camp.
